FAQ - Cammino Mariano Occidentale
Who can I contact during my pilgrimage?
Who will hand over the testimonium at the end of the Cammino?
The testimonium will be awarded by the rector at the Santuario di Tirano upon presentation of a completed credential—your pilgrim’s passport containing stamps from each of the stages.
Is it possible to have luggage transferred between the stages?
Yes, there is currently an organised and dedicated service. Information is available on the dedicated page under "Organize the pilgrimage" - "Travel packages".
Can I reach the starting points of each stage using public transport?
Yes, the TRENORD Milan-Tirano train line calls at, or very close by, all the stage starts. To reach the smaller villages, you may have to take one of the local TRENORD services, which run along the same Milan–Tirano line. Bus services also run in the area. PLEASE CONSULT THE SECTION ENTITLED ‘HOW TO GET HERE’ FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.
Is it possible to complete the individual stages of the Cammino on separate occasions?
Yes. There is no obligation to complete the Cammino in its entirety in one go. To receive the testimonium testifying that you have completed the Cammino, you just need to have collected the stamps for each of the stages.
How do I get to the official start of "Cammino occidentale" that is the Santuario di Piantedo?
After arriving at the train station in Colico by train or bus, there’s a 4 km walk to the start. From Colico you can also take a bus (about 5 minutes) to Piantedo
Where do I get the Credential, the pilgrim’s passport?
To obtain the Credential, all you have to do is select in the menu "Credential and Testimonium" the route (Western route or Eastern route). Then all you have to do is fill in the required fields and, after selecting "send", you will obtain a pdf file containing the Credential, the so-called "pilgrim's passport". The Credential will immediately be available for download on your device (smartphone, PC) and will also be sent by e-mail to the mailbox you indicated in the form.
Is the Cammino well sign-posted? What do I need to look out for?
The signposting of the path is well visible and clear. It is unidirectional, the western walk starts from the church of Madonna di Valpozzo in Piantedo towards the Sanctuary of Tirano (the destination of the walk). The signs are on a blue background with the special logo of the Marian Way of the Alps. There are also notice boards along the route with news and in-depth information.
Do I need any special equipment? Does the route contain technical sections?
No. The route follows a mixture of hiking paths, old mule tracks, and lanes, which will not pose a significant challenge.
Should I do any special training beforehand?
Before taking on any walk, especially one taking place in the mountains, less experienced hikers should endeavour to build up their endurance gradually by increasing the length of each walk. You may find that walking poles come in useful. Depending on your fitness, you can opt to shorten the stages by breaking them into more doable stretches and book overnight stays mid-way.
Can I walk the Cammino at any time of the year?
March to November is the best time of the year to complete this walk; the usability of the route is not guaranteed in the remaining months
